Bye bye Borsigstrasse – A warehouse on the move

15. Apr 2019 | People + Business

After almost 10 years of storage, which saw a throughput of several thousand pallets and countless company barbecues, it was finally time to shut the doors on our external warehouse in Borsigstrasse, Heusenstamm.

Although the warehouse was exclusively used as a reserve storage space, it played an important part for us nonetheless. Due to the fact that our (main) Herth+Buss warehouse couldn’t offer sufficient capacity for our reserve stock during this period, we relocated this stock to our external warehouse. Time and time again, this called for a great deal of organisational effort on our part – whether posting items to the external warehouse or bringing them back to our main premises.

The end of an era

Our new warehouse, which became operational at the end of 2018, can easily accommodate every last bit of capacity from the external warehouse. We were able to smoothly incorporate a large portion of the stock transfer into our day-to-day business. This enabled us to run down the stock in the external warehouse gradually without any real “heave-ho”. However, this didn’t work out for some of the pallets.

Each day, the deadline drew a little closer until around 1000 pallets were still sat on the external site. We quickly realised that we needed to clear the place within just two weeks. No sooner said than done! We set up a two-man team to get the pallets out and – most importantly – relocate them within the set period.

Planning the move

After discussion with our haulier Duwensee, we rented an HGV (including the driver). On four out of five working days, this was at our disposal for moving the pallets to the desired storage locations.
As such, the stock was gradually run down, enabling us to guarantee a permanent flow of stock in the main warehouse during the relocation and transport.
Shutting down the external warehouse enabled us to add a few new toys to our fleet of vehicles at the Dieselstrasse site: two stand-on stackers, one front-loader forklift, one electric pallet truck and one stand-on pallet truck. All this new kit will surely boost our performance in the main warehouse to even higher levels.

Redistributing the stock

We were able to transfer many of the pallets to our central warehouse on the Dieselstrasse site and store them there. A small portion of the items initially needed to be brought to the packaging area to be re-packaged. Over the period of being stored externally, some of the packing units had changed, and certain packaging needed to be renewed. Due to their turnover rate, a little over half of the items were able to be transported to our partner and haulier Duwensee before being stored according to the principle of outsourcing.

After two weeks of shuffling, relocating pallets, re-packaging and keeping the day-to-day business going, we are proud to have accomplished this task as a team. Even if it might have looked like things wouldn’t all fit at certain points, our motto proved to be true yet again: Herth+Buss, passt immer!

Now we’re off to tie up the last loose ends in the warehouse and say “bye bye Borsigstrasse”!
