5 things I can’t do without – SelectH2

Over 85 percent of cars registered in Germany now have an air conditioning system. This is pushing up the number of faults, and workshops are having to adjust to this. The conventional time-consuming process of locating leaks using a contrast agent and UV light is far more laborious – and is actually prohibited under the EU’s Climate Protection Regulation 2008. This is where the SelectH2 comes in. Thanks to its innovative technology, the SelectH2 has shown the market what it can do. Benefits

The SelectH2 manages to solve a familiar problem during the use of contrast agents. If too much contrast agent is added to the refrigerant circuit, this can glue up the valves of the A/C system itself and even those of the air conditioning service device. This problem is prevented by using the SelectH2.
The old saying “Time is money” can be heard everywhere, and our garages are no different: Careful calibration of the leak detector device ensures it will for example detect a faulty heat exchanger without removing the dashboard from the vehicle. It solely responds to hydrogen, so there’s no danger of misdiagnosis due to oil or petrol fumes. This saves workshops valuable time.

In contrast to the existing device (article number 95980002) with a swan neck 300 mm long, the swan neck of the new SelectH2 has been extended to 500 mm to provide the extra length needed to reach inaccessible areas. This extra length sometimes means that the panelling on the vehicle doesn’t have to be removed.

Our second new leak detector also features the 500 mm swan neck, but has a more slender/compact sensor head. This allows the device to be used for detection in tricky, complex and tight spaces. Both devices work on the tried and tested leak detection principle using forming gas for the sustainable, environmentally compatible location of leaks.

How does it all work?

The way the SelectH2 leak detector works is unique among mobile devices around the world, as well as being extremely easy and efficient to use. It functions with forming gas, which consists of 95 percent nitrogen and 5 percent hydrogen.
Hydrogen offers a further benefit due to its chemical properties. It can diffusethrough even the smallest hairline cracks, allowing it to detect leaks quickly and reliably. This is almost impossible with conventional devices.

The evacuated air conditioning unit is filled with test gas at 7-8 bar so the non-flammable and non-toxic forming gas is distributed evenly throughout the A/C unit’s cooling system.
The SelectH2 is switched on and the sensors heat up. As soon as they are hot (approx. 55 seconds), leak location can begin.

The sensor head of the SelectH2 must now be guided at a uniform speed along the hose connections, fastenings, condensers, dryers and seals of the air conditioning system in the engine bay.
In the event of a leak, the hydrogen, which is highly volatile, will then escape there.
The leak detector owes its success to being equipped with two sensors (unique double sensor system).

SelectH2 mini

The SelectH2 mini works using diffusion technology, managing to select escaping gas at extremely low concentrations, in this case involving parts per million (ppm). This guarantees a high detection rate even with the tiniest leaks.
The device indicates leaks by emitting an acoustic alarm. The intermittent signal tone gets faster as the concentration detected increases. The sensor check is carried out automatically, meaning errors are also detected automatically.
After leak location, the forming gas can be discharged into the air without any problems.
