Questions and answers on tyre pressure monitoring systems

TPMS - Legal requirements and market potential

Specifications as per EU regulation ECE-R 64
All vehicles in model classes M1 and N1 registered for the first time since 1 November 2014 must be equipped as standard with a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS). This relates specifically to passenger cars, mobile homes and commercial vehicles with a total weight of less than 3.5 t and licensed to carry up to eight occupants. Road safety is one of the reasons behind the new regulation – Tyre leaks are detected quickly and automatically by the tyre pressure sensor. Another reason is that correctly inflated tyres reduce fuel consumption and with it CO2 emissions. Since May 2018 defective tyre pressure monitoring systems have been a serious problem for the TÜV inspection agency and mean re-inspection is required. This legal position applies to all vehicles that must be equipped with a TPMS in accordance with the legislation.

What are the minimum requirements to be observed?

ECE-R 64 stipulates the following minimum requirements for tyre pressure monitoring systems:
A warning must be given with a pressure loss of 20 percent or more or with a tyre pressure less than 1.5 bar.

  • A defective tyre must be detected within ten minutes.
  • If all four tyres are affected, the time must not exceed 60 minutes.
  • A defective system component must be indicated within ten minutes.
  • The tyre pressure monitoring system must function with an average speed of 40 km/h or more.
What are the consequences for workshops?

The replacement of TPMS sensors is a source of additional business and greater customer loyalty for independent workshops and tyre services. The number of new cars with tyre pressure monitoring systems will increase dramatically and with it the demand for winter tyres for vehicles, which then have to be retrofitted with TPMS sensors. Workshops and tyre services should therefore adjust to this new situation.

Which system do vehicle manufacturers tend to opt for?

Vehicle manufacturers tend to opt for the active measuring tyre pressure monitoring systems using radio sensors. This is faster and more precise than the passive measuring system using ABS/ESP.

Which languages are programmed on the AirGuard?

German, English, French, Spanish, Dutch, Italian, Finnish (Suomen Kieli) and Slovenian are currently available. If there is a demand for other languages to be added, they will be provided via an update on the website.

Can TPMS sensors from other manufacturers also be adapted with the AirGuard?

The AirGuard concept is a self-contained system. Third-party / OE sensors can only be read out or copied. Programming of third-party tyre pressure sensors is not possible.

What happens if the desired vehicle model cannot be displayed?

If the vehicle model is not present, reference can be made to an older model. Please always see to check you have installed the latest update. However, it is also possible that the model is installed with an indirect measuring tyre pressure monitoring system (e.g. SEAT).

Herth+Buss tyre pressure sensor

To programme our tyre pressure sensors and align them with the relevant vehicle, you will need one of our AirGuard devices. Special features of our TPMS sensors:

  • Programming and alignment within five to fifteen seconds per tyre pressure sensor
  • The original ID number can be copied to the new one from the old TPMS sensor or re-allocated
  • Tyre pressure sensor can be rewritten
  • Sensors can be ordered individually and come with a complete valve

TPMS sensors – Questions and answers

Is the Herth+Buss tyre pressure sensor available as a retrofit solution for vehicles without TPMS?

No. Herth+Buss tyre pressure sensors should only be used for vehicles fitted with TPMS by the manufacturer.

How long is the service life of a battery installed in the TPMS sensor? Can the battery be replaced?

The service life of the batteries in the tyre pressure sensor is three to seven years. The battery is permanently encapsulated in the sensor and cannot therefore be replaced.

Can the vehicle data in the TPMS sensor be deleted?

No. The data can be overwritten any number of times.

Can the tyre pressure sensor be adapted to any rim?

Yes, the sensor angle can be adjusted as required.

The AnoKath A/C disinfection spray used here is a powerful oxidising agent made from water and sodium chloride. The agent is applied to A/C systems using the special AirClean cold nebulisers to disinfect the air conditioning. This highly effective A/C disinfection spray reliably reduces germs, viruses and bacteria. The disinfection process with AnoKath is minerals-based.

"We have been using the AirClean for climate disinfection for several years and are very satisfied with it. Recently, caravan owners in particular have become aware of us via the Herth+Buss website, as we are listed there as an AirClean partner workshop.

A great example of an application was a caravan that was completely covered with black mould in the inside. After a basic cleaning we disinfected the trailer with AirClean and let it stay like this overnight. After the treatment the unpleasant smell were completely gone and also the mould and bacteria were eliminated. To check this we had a laboratory test done. The result convinced us of AirClean again! We can highly recommend AirClean. A good argument is also that it is not a chemical product and is also compatible for allergy sufferers. The device is also easy to operate and the time required is very low."

Coronavirus FAQ – Questions and answers

How can I protect myself from the coronavirus?

If you want to avoid infection, it is best to stay at home and avoid social contacts. Unfortunately this does not work for everyone and is difficult to implement in some professions. Therefore it is important to carry out a thorough disinfection also in the vehicle interior. This can be done with the help of our AirClean. You can find information about new corona virus (SARS-CoV-2) on the website of the World Health Organization (WHO).

Why should I do surface cleaning?

Since SARS-CoV-2 is a new virus, experts do not yet know how long the viruses can survive on inanimate surfaces. However, it is suspected that the corona virus can survive for up to 3 days on surfaces. With the help of wipe disinfection and our disinfectant, you can prevent the germs from being carried over during wiping.

Why does a room disinfection to reduce viruses, bacteria and spores make sense?

Pathogens enter the body through the air via the respiratory organs or mucous membranes. With our disinfectant AirClean and the cold spray gun, the tiny droplets contribute to a reduction of germs in room air and surfaces.

FAQ – Questions and answers

How long will the A/C disinfection spray keep for?

When unopened and adhering to the stipulated storage conditions, the product can be kept for a maximum of 12 months. Please refer to the information on the label. Once opened and when adhering to the stipulated storage conditions, the product can be kept for a maximum of 6 months.

Can any type of compressor be used?

Yes, in principle. However, it is recommended using an oil-free compressor. When utilising conventional compressors with lubrication, a reliable oil trap and filter must be used. The following must be guaranteed:

  • Clean compressed air with no rust residues, condensate or oil content. Even the smallest quantities of oil, rust or other impurities may impair the effectiveness of the A/C disinfection spray.
  • Effective supply quantity >100 l/min
  • Set pressure 3 bar
  • The compressor must be able to operate continuously to an adequate extent.
Where should A/C disinfection of the vehicle be carried out?

This should be carried out in well-ventilated rooms or outside (not in the rain) at an ambient temperature of 20-25 °C. Direct sunlight and an internal vehicle temperature of over 25 °C should be avoided.

What should I pay attention to when disinfecting the A/C system or the vehicle?

The vehicle's cabin air filter should be removed before disinfection and then replaced with a new one after disinfection. The mist should also be fed directly into the air intake ducts to ensure adequate distribution throughout the air conditioning system. The vehicle manufacturer’s instructions must be observed. In general, the vehicle should always be cleaned thoroughly before disinfection.

How much air-conditioning cleaner is required for each application and each type of vehicle?

The consumption rates for air-conditioning cleaner are approximately as follows:

  • Small car: application time 5 minutes; consumption 70 ml
  • Mid-range car: application time 10 minutes; consumption 100 ml
  • Van/SUV/minibus: application time 12 minutes; consumption 120 ml
